Many marketers resist using podcasts as a marketing tool, even though they can be an effective way to engage an audience. That is likely because creating a podcast seems much too complicated and difficult. But it need not be, says Mack Collier in his MarketingProfs article Ten Steps to Creating Your Own Podcast. You just need to know which bases to cover and then plan, research, test, and practice... till you get it right. The following are among the bits of useful advice he offers.

The Blue Microphones Yeti Pro is the described by blue as ‘the world’s first USB microphone combining 24-bit/192 kHz digital recording resolution with analog XLR output”.

At $250, it’s probably not going to be a first podcasting mic or mic for general recording. But, given its power and flexibility, the Yeti Pro is a great first ‘grown up mic’, when you’re ready for a microphone that offers professional features and audio quality.

The key features of the Yeti Pro are:

Three custom condenser capsules and four different polar pattern settings: Cardioid, Stereo, Bidirectional and Omnidirectional.

Advanced A-D converter chip plus a separate analog circuit path for use with professional studio mixers and preamps

Built-in headphone amplifier for zero-latency monitoring, and direct controls for headphone volume, pattern selection, mute, and microphone gain

15 Hz-22 kHz frequency response

192 kHz/24 bit sample rate and bit depth

The first thing you’ll notice about the Yeti Pro is the mic’s weight and style. The Yeti Pro weighs a little over 3 pounds on its stand, so it feels extremely solid. Everything appears to be made of metal and features gorgeous finishes. Stylewise, the mic looks like it was inspired by vintage designs, but isn’t slavishly retro.

Controls for the Yeti Pro are intelligently placed:

On the front, there is a mute button and a volume knob for the headphones.

Around the back, the Yeti Pro has a gain knob and a four-position switch for setting the mic pattern.

Finally, on the bottom, there are the connectors – for USB audio, analog output, mini headphone jack and a threaded mic stand mount.

The mic base has no-skid pads on the bottom and has enough weight to keep it firmly in place. There are two knobs on the stand that you can loosen to adjust the position of the microphone.

The necessary cables for using the Yeti Pro are provided, including a USB cable and a stereo XLR splitter.

In addition to the design and build quality, there are a couple of features of the Yeti Pro that make it stand out.

The Yeti Pro offers both digital and analog output. This is a great feature, because it make the mic a plug-and-play solution for your computer, but also lets you use easily use it with traditional analog gear. This also may offer a bit ‘future-proofing’, since you won’t be locked into the existing USB output.

The Yeti Pro offers four mic patterns. This is sort of like having four microphones in one:

The Cardioid setting is good for typical podcasting and vocal work, with a unidirectional pickup pattern. That means it will primarily pickup sound hitting the front grill of the mic.

The Stereo setting is good for when you capture ensembles, or just to capture a stereo image.

The Bidirectional setting might be useful for doing interviews or other situations where you want to capture sound from both sides of the mic, but still screen out ambient sound.

The Omnidirectional setting configures the mic to captures sound equally in a 360 degree circle. This could be useful for capturing small group discussions.

For basic use, you can plug the Yeti Pro in via USB, set it to Cardiod, adjust the gain and forget about it. But, if you need a mic for just about any other situation, you can quickly adjust the Yeti Pro and be ready to go.

Using The Yeti Pro Microphone

We found the Yeti Pro to be a no-brainer to use. On the Mac, it’s a plug-and-play device. You plug the USB cable into the only place it will fit on the mic, plug it into your computer, and it works.

Better yet, it delivered excellent results on everything we tried it with.

In GarageBand, the Yeti Pro shows up in the Input Source drop-down as Mono 1, Mono 2 or Stereo 1/2. This lets you record from the mic into mono or stereo channels.

The built-in headphone amp is a nice feature that avoids the funky echo effect you can get if you monitor the audio after it’s gone in and out of your computer.

Summary:

The Yeti Pro is a very nicely designed mic, with excellent build quality and advanced features that make it a flexible choice for a first ‘grown up’ microphone.

The Yeti Pro retails for around $250. The Yeti is also available in a standard version, which you can find for around $100. The Yeti Pro differs from the standard version in two main ways:

The Yeti Pro offers analog output via a standard XLR connector

192 kHz/24-bit resolution, vs 48 kHz/26-bit on the standard Yeti

Pros:

Delivers great results

Easy to use

Great design and build quality

Cons

Not a good choice for a portable mic because of its weight

The metal connectors of the Yeti Pro stand lock down directly against the mics body, which will result in paint chipping if you take the mic on and off the stand.

If you’ve used the Yeti Pro yourself, let us know what you think of it!

I read this piece on TechCrunch last week, in which a Samsung product manager says this about Apple and their TV.

“TVs are ultimately about picture quality.”

Okay. That marks Samsung as one of the pigs in an Angry Birds game. Like Kodak and Blackberry in years-gone-by.

I was watching the Knicks game on Time-Warner cable last night, and remembered why TV sucks, and it had nothing to do with picture quality. The picture quality was absolutely fantastic. If you had time-transported me from ten years ago to my couch last night I would have been blown away. HD is great. Unbelievable how beautiful it is. And the sound quality was great too. I have some very nice Polk Audio tower speakers, and a very powerful receiver driving them, connected optically to the set-top-box. Amazing audio experience.

Yet the whole overall experience sucked.

And that’s it, in a nutshell. People have known that Apple is working on an improved approach to television for years. Competitors have had the opportunity to make television work intelligently.

Yet most of us are still struggling with three remotes, every time we want to watch something. And no Internet integration. And no gaming or social media. No support for broadcasting your own channel from your home.

Apple just dropped the ‘Mac’ From OS X. There’s a reason for that.

Expect the next version of Apple TV to wreak havoc on the TV and broadcast industries, just as Apple has done with the PC industry, the MP3 player industry and the phone industry.

Google’s Blogger has had some issues where new posts on custom domains aren’t being indexed by Google.

Bloggers have been complaining about it, understandably, on Google’s Webmaster Help forum (via Barry Schwartz).

Apparently, Google initially thought it was happening as the result of normal updating, but Google’s John Mueller chimed in to say, “We hear from your posts here that these fluctuations haven’t settled down for some of you, so we’re definitely still looking into those details.”

“Fluctuations in crawling and indexing can be normal, and are to be expected,” he added. “While we work hard to make the processes as stable as possible, temporary changes can occur over time. In this case, it looks like we may have reduced crawling of some sites temporarily (this should be back to normal since several days though). You can see our crawling activity in your server logs, or in the Webmaster Tools “Crawl stats” section. If you have seen fluctuations like that in this time, keep in mind that it may take a bit of time for things to settle back down again.”

“Generally speaking, one possible way to make sure that technical fluctuations like these are resolved as quickly as possible is to make sure that you have a fantastic website,” he continued. “While the quality of your website won’t keep technical issues away completely, it can help to make sure that our algorithms are happy to spend a significant part of their time/resources on crawling and indexing your content in an optimal way. While I haven’t reviewed all of the sites that posted here, some of them do look like they could be somewhat improved. If you’re unsure what that could involve, I’d recommend starting a new thread here, listing your site’s URL, the goals of your site, and asking for honest & open feedback from the community at large. A good rule of thumb is to try to be the absolute best, by far, website in your niche — don’t focus on other websites that are ‘just as bad’ or ‘doing the same thing.’”

Earlier this month, Google revealed that it was redirecting Blogger blogs to country-specific URLs. So, for example, people in India trying to navigate to a Blogger.com blog, would be redirected to the country-code top level domain (blogger.in).
