RawVoice Unveils Media-on-Demand Service

April 14, 2011 by Elisabeth Lewin

Podcast production and hosting company RawVoice has introduced a new media-on-demand service at this week’s National Association of Broadcasters [NAB] Show in Las Vegas April 9-14.

Dubbed “Cue Too,” the media-on-demand (MOD/VOD) service will allow content creators, independent film artists, bands, educators and all others who create content to sell their content online and through over-the-top (OTT) television. RawVoice spokesmen say this will “give consumers a centralized location to find premium content that is not available through traditional video-on-demand channels,” and allow content creators the capability to sell shows on a subscription or [single] per-episode basis.

RawVoice’s on-demand service debut follows on last year’s successful launches of multiple media channels on devices such as the Roku and Boxee.

This service will be introduced through a new channel on the Roku initially, and on its own media portal. RawVoice was demonstrating the new Cue Too service at NAB this week, and is working with existing content creators as well as seeking out new ones to broaden the library of available content on the new service. RawVoice officials forecast a full roll-out of the service within a few weeks.

Company officials invite content creators to contact them if they are interested in being part of the new on-demand service launch.

Wizzard Media Launches Web Based Premium Podcast Subscription Service

March 17, 2011 by Elisabeth Lewin

Podcasting network Wizzard Media has announced the launch of a web-based “premium podcast” subscription service for publishers using the Libsyn platform. This service allows podcast publishers to sell individual podcast episodes, and create paid subscription packages for their premium content, delivering the content via the web, which the company calls “a natural extension” to the mobile App subscription products recently launched by Wizzard.

Content creators who have been testing out the new subscription service over the past two weeks have reported initial sales of premium content subscription packages via the web already rivaling those for mobile App subscription sales, according to Wizzard spokesmen. “We continue to build tools and services for our publishers so that they may reach their audiences and monetize their content no matter where or how the content is enjoyed,” said Chris Spencer, Wizzard Media CEO.

Wizzard Media partnered with online subscription expert MediaPass to offer this new service to its publishers. Integrating MediaPass extends podcasters’ smartphone-based monetization models to the web. The potential benefit to the subscription revenue model is that it builds on itself over time through renewals, unlike advertising-only models.

“While a lot of current podcast content will continue to be free for audiences, this new feature allows our publishers to boost revenues through customized subscription models, targeting the optimal mix of free and paid content,” says Laurie Sims, President, Wizzard Media. “Implementing this new service is as easy as AdSense and takes less than 15 minutes, delivering to our publishers the benefits of a sophisticated paywall without the immense startup costs.”

Sennheiser MK 4 Condenser Microphone

January 26, 2011 by Elisabeth Lewin

At the 2011 NAMM Show, German audio specialist Sennheiser presented their new MK 4 large-diaphragm true condenser microphone. This cardioid microphone is the company’s first large-diaphragm side-address microphone and, according to company spokesmen, “focuses on giving the best possible sound quality rather than technical extravagance.”

The MK 4 was developed for professional users in project studios, but is equally suited for other recording environments, and is tough enough for use on stage. With a retail price of $299, it is also affordable for home recordists, podcasters and musicians.

“In the development of the MK 4, we invested every euro in getting the best possible sound,” explained Product Manager Sebastian Schmitz.  “We focused on the key elements of a good studio microphone to ensure that we can offer the MK 4 to our customers at an attractive price.”

Sound coming from the sides of the mic is picked up without coloration and so does not change the overall sound quality. The microphone has vivid mids and is also very detailed in the bass range. At the same time, typical cardioid cancellation is relatively frequency-independent.

The MK 4 has a large 1-inch diaphragm precisely spattered with 24-carat gold. The sturdy metal housing and the elastically mounted capsule make the microphone tough enough for even the most energetic recording situations. The suppression of handling noise offered by the internal capsule mount can be even further improved by the use of an elastic suspension [available as an accessory].

The open front of the suspension mount enables the MK 4 to be positioned close to the sound source. The microphone has a maximum sound pressure level of 140 dB, and its self-noise of 10 dB(A) is extremely low. “The MK 4 is highly versatile for vocals, acoustic guitars and grand pianos as well as for strings and wind instruments,” Sebastian Schmitz explained. “What is more, in numerous field trials it has proven to be an excellent microphone for use with guitar amplifiers, drums and percussion. To sum up: it is an unpretentious microphone with outstanding sound.”

The MK 4 will be available after the NAMM Show, and comes complete with a microphone clip and a protective pouch. Optional accessories include an elastic suspension, a foam windshield and a pop-shield.

Blue Microphones Debuts Sexy ‘Reactor’ Mic

January 25, 2011 by Elisabeth Lewin

From the 2011 NAMM Show: Blue Microphones has given a sneak peek at its new Reactor mic, which is coming to market this spring. A multi-pattern, large diaphragm condenser microphone, the Reactor “pushes the envelope” of microphone design in its functional versatility, sound and aesthetics.

Reactor combines Blue’s large-format capsule technology with an innovative approach to professional multi-pattern flexibility in this microphone. Reactor unites an innovative pattern selection method with a swiveling capsule head for precise positioning. Featuring Blue’s premium condenser capsule and proprietary pre-amp circuit, Reactor allows for noiseless live switching between the three distinct patterns (cardioid, omni or bi-directional).

The noiseless, live pattern switching capabilities allow the Reactor microphone’s sound to be tuned to specific uses such as full and present vocals, warm guitar acoustics, even capturing the room frequencies of drums.

Featuring an innovative swiveling design, Reactor’s capsule head rotates fluidly across a 90 degree range. Facilitating ease-of-use in multiple mic setups such as Mid/Side or X-Y recording, Reactor’s swivel head allows for accuracy and fine-tuning of setup geometry and microphone tone. Reactor’s recording pattern selection features a LED-backlit pattern indicators and a unique magnifying optic.

Reactor comes with a coordinated carrying case for protection and storage, along with a custom-tailored shock mount. A custom pop filter will complete the recording experience. The suggested retail price for Reactor is $499, which is expected in stores Spring 2011.

Pope Gives Social Media ‘Thumbs Up’

January 24, 2011 by Elisabeth Lewin

Pope Benedict, in celebration of the Vatican’s annual World Day of Social Communications, today issued a message inviting Christians to “join the network of relationships” made possible by the digital era.

Benedict says “the truth of Christ is the full and authentic response to that human desire for relationship, communion and meaning,” which is reflected in the popularity of social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

While Pope Benedict himself is still in practice a fully analog communicator, said to write out his missives in longhand, the Vatican under his leadership has managed to dabble in new media over the past few years, including the launch of a YouTube channel , a Facebook app, and a website.

The Pope suggests that Catholics should:

  • Make good use of their presence in the digital world;
  • Not merely take part in social networks, but “contribute to the development of new and more complex intellectual and spiritual horizons, new forms of shared awareness;”
  • Engage in respectful and sensitive dialogue; and
  • Witness consistently, in one’s own digital profile and in the way one communicates choices, preferences and judgements that are fully consistent with the Gospel.

What do you think of the Vatican’s stance on participation in, and use of, social networks?

Do you think other religious leaders take positions on the use of social networks and new media?

Olympus Debuts LS-7 Digital Recorder

January 22, 2011 by Elisabeth Lewin

At the 2011 NAMM Show: Olympus has unveiled its compact new LS-7 “pocket” linear PCM audio recording device.

At just 4.4 inches and weighing 3 ounces, the LS-7 fits is about the size of a candy bar, and fits into a pocket, but can record uncompressed 24 bit/96kHz linear PCM audio in WAV, MP3 and WMA formats using either its internal mics or by plugging in an external mic. The recorder should be available for purchase around March 1, with a suggested retail price of $199.

Equipped with a generous 4 gigabytes of internal flash memory, the LS-7 has the capacity to grab lengthy, uncompressed PCM recordings. It also features a microSD removable media card slot. The LS-7 operates on two rechargeable AAA batteries. An optional RS-30W Wireless Remote enables users to start and stop the recording without touching the unit [a nice feature for live gigs].

The LS-7 employs two condenser stereo mics and a center, omni-directional mic capable of capturing lower bass ranges as low as 20Hz. The 45-degree outward positions of the two condenser mics enable users to record with wider stereo sound.  In addition, the LS-7 can play back audio on its built-in speaker. Finally, the LS-7 features a switchable low-cut filter that enables users to eliminate low-frequency sound from 100Hz and 300Hz.

Another cool feature of the LS-7 which I had not seen before in a portable digital recorder is voice guidance, whereby the recorder can provide audio menu prompts for users with assistive needs. This helps the user operate the device without needing to see the menus or buttons.

In addition to Olympus Sonority software, the LS-7 is packaged with a USB cable, windscreen, carrying case, two rechargeable AAA batteries, strap, an instruction manual and Olympus warranty card. Optional accessories for the LS-7 include the infrared RS-30W Wireless Remote, WJ2 Wind Jammer and A514 AC adapter.

See more product specs and pictures at the Olympus site.

Windows Mobile 7 Adoption Stats Show Platform Struggling For Traction

December 17, 2010 by Elisabeth Lewin

A preliminary look at Microsoft’s newest mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7, shows that the platform is off to a disappointing start, and is struggling to gain even the tiniest foothold.  According to mobile ad network Chitika, Windows Phone 7 is outnumbered over 100 to 1 by both Android and iPhone, month and a half after its launch.

While MSNBC sounds an optimistic note about the mobile operating system [in the "it's too early to call it dead - yet" vein], Chitika counted 110 Android impressions and 172 iPhone impressions, for every one Windows Phone 7 impression over the past three weeks since the WP7 launch.  “That number is remaining relatively stable, with very little significant market share growth in WP7,” writes Dan Ruby, Online Insights Research Director at Chitika.

Chitika’s Ruby suggests that, rather than dwell on lackluster adoption rates compared to those of the Droid and iPhone, Microsoft should focus its attention in the arena where it has the upper hand — the corporation. Says Ruby, “Microsoft may do well to position Windows Phone 7 as a BlackBerry nemesis rather than an iPhone/Android killer – the corporate worker’s smartphone of 2011.”
